Rangpur-3 by polls: AL aspirant quits race

RANGPUR: The Awami League candidate Advocate Rezaul Karim Raju has stepped out of race in the Rangpur-3 by-election.

Rangpur city AL general secretary Tusar Kanti Mandol confirmed the matter to Banglanews at about 2.30pm on Monday (September 16).

He said that earlier on September 7, Prime Minister and Awami League Chief Sheikh Hasina had given party candidacy to Rezaul Karim Raju at a meeting of the nomination scrutiny board at Ganabhaban to contest the Rangpur-3 by-election.

On that day, however, the Prime Minister said, according to the party constitution, we have to give candidate as a large party, so I gave. As the Jatiya Party is part of our alliance, this candidature will be withdrawn. We will back the alliance candidate.

The Prime Minister said the decision was taken in honor of Jatiya Party's founding chairman HM Ershad.

Jatiya Party nominated Shad Ershad, son of its late chairman HM Ershad, for Rangpur-3 by-election.

By-election to Rangpur-3 seat that vacated after the death of Jatiya Party chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad will be held on October 5.

The Rangpur-3 constituency consists of Sadar Upazila and wards no 9 to 33 of the Rangpur City Corporation, apart from the number 1 to 8.
