DHAKA: BNP has nominated Bangladesh People’s Party Chairman Rita Rahman, an ally of 20-party alliance, as its candidate who will contest in the Rangpur-3 constituency by-election with Sheaf of Paddy (poll symbol).
The party's senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said this at a press briefing at the BNP's central office in Nayapaltan on Sunday (September 8).
The Election Commission declared the Rangpur-3 seat vacant after the death of Jatiya Party founder HM Ershad. The by-election will be held on October 5.
A total of four nominations were expected from the seat, including four from the BNP. The BNP's highest policy-making forum held its final meeting on Saturday (September 7). The decision was taken at that meeting.
In the last eleventh parliamentary elections, BNP nominated Rita Rahman as alliance candidate without giving the party candidate.
The parliamentary seats fell vacant after the death of Jatiya Party chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad on July 14.
