DHAKA: Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina said that she was involved in politics since her school days but she did not think about holding post of the party.
Sheikh Hasina, the elder daughter of Bangabandhu, said this during the exchange of greetings with the leaders and activists of Awami League and front organizations, on the occasion of the Homecoming day of her at Ganobhaban on Friday (May 17).
When I was the student of Dhaka University, I was a member of the DU BCL Committee. Never thought about holding party post, I did not want the post. We created the posts and kept this responsibility for the posts to others.
After the association of Bangabandhu with most of family members on August 15, 1975, Sheikh Hasina was elected as the president when she was exile in foreign country.
Recalling it, PM Hasina said after 1975, she had never thought that she will have to take such a big responsibility.
Top Awami League leaders, led by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader, greeted the Prime Minister with flowers. Besides, the top leaders of front organization of Awami League also greeted the Prime Minister on the occasion of her homecoming day.
On May 17 in 1981, she returned home after a long exile nearly six years after the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members.
Under her leadership, Awami League (AL) won the general election on June 12 in 1996 and formed the government. Despite different problems, the country is moving ahead because of Sheikh Hasina’s farsighted and strong leadership and people-oriented activities.
