DHAKA: Putting out his latest political feelers, former president and Jatiya Party chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad MP left Dhaka for a four-day visit to his hometown Rangpur on Tuesday morning.

Sunil Kumar, private secretary to HM Ershad, said the former army chief and military ruler is governing-body chairman of many educational institutions in the district. “He has gone to Rangpur to attend some meetings of the governing bodies.”

Ershad is not happy being an ally of the ruling Awami League-led grand alliance without having any role that befits him--and he has vented his wrath before the media.

“I do not want to stay with the grand alliance as a less important person,” said Ershad two days ago.

Sources also informed that he might sit with local leaders for a parley over the issue of quitting the grand alliance.

Ershad would return to the capital on June 25, said Sunil.
