General holiday again if corona situation worsens

DHAKA: If the coronavirus situation deteriorates countrywide, the government may declare general holiday again, some senior ministers said.

They told Banglanews that the government will monitor the situation closely till June 15 to take the decision.

On May 31, the government reopens the offices on limited scale in the country after 66 days of general holiday considering the suffering of people amid the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Bangladesh on Tuesday (June 2) reported record 2,911 new coronavirus patients in last 24 hours, pushing the total number of coronavirus cases to 52,445. More 37 people died from COVID-19 raising the total deaths toll to 709.

A senior minister seeking anonymity told Banglanews that they will closely observe the situation in next 15 days. The government will go for strict lockdown declaring general holiday, if the coronavirus situation across the country deteriorated.

On June 1, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said if the situation worsens due to unawareness and disregard for hygiene and if it goes against the public interest, the government will be forced to take a tough decision again.

Agriculture minister Dr Abdur Razzak told Banglanews: “We have to run in an uncertain situation. We will observe the situation next 10-15 days and will take decision considering the actual condition”.

State minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury told Banglanews that the decision will be taken after observing the situation for 15 days. The decision will be taken keeping the country and its people in mind, he added.
