Nusrat murder case verdict Thursday

FENI: A tribunal in the district will deliver its verdict on Thursday (Oct 24) in the Sonagazi madrasa girl Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case.   

Earlier on Sep 30, Judge Mamunur Rashid of Feni Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal fixed the date. 

The whole country, including Sonagazi of Feni, is awaiting the verdict. 

Nusrat's mother Shirin Akhtar and her relatives demanded highest punishment for the accused. The plaintiff's lawyers are also expecting the maximum penalty. The citizens of Feni also want exemplary punishment.

Advocate of the plaintiff, Shahjahan Saju, Advocate of Bangladesh Supreme Court and Feni Judge Court, said that the testimony and prosecution of the accused have concluded in just 61 working days. Settlement of such sensational case in such a short time is a rare occurrence. 

Earlier on June 20, the same tribunal indicted 16 accused in the case filed over killing of Feni madrasa girl Nusrat Jahan Rafi by setting her on fire.

The accused are Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa’s ex-principal Siraj Ud Doula, Awami League leader Ruhul Amin, Nur Uddin, Shahdat Hossain Shamim, Maksud Alam alias Moksud councilor, Saifur Rahman Mohammad Jobayer, Jabed Hossain alias Sakhwat Hossain Jaber, Hafez Abdul Kader, Absar Uddin, Kamrun Nahar Moni, Umme Sultana Popy alias Tuhin alias Champa/Shampa, Abdur Rahim Sharif, Eftekhar Uddin Rana, Imran Hossain alias Mamun, Mohammad Shamim and Mohiuddin Shakil.

Earlier on June 10, the same court accepted the charge-sheet submitted against 16 people in the case filed over killing Feni madrasa girl Nusrat Jahan Rafi by setting her on fire. 

The court also set June 20 for next hearing to frame charges against those involved in the incident.

Judge Mamunur Rashid of Feni Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Monday (June 10) accepted the charge-sheet when Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted charge-sheet and produced the accused before it. 

PBI brought charges against 16 people while it exempted five arrestees from the charge-sheet. 

Sonagazi madrasa Principal Siraj Ud Doula has been made prime accused in the murder case. 

On the basis of the complaint, we sought the death penalty for each accused, said Banaj Kumar Mazumder, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) at Dhanmondi on Tuesday (May 28).

In the 772-page charge sheet, the role of each accused in the incident is given in detail.

Ninety-two witnesses have been included in the final charge-sheet. 

Of the 16 accused, 12 have already given their confessional statement before magistrate, he said. 

Nusrat Jahan Rafi, the madrasha girl from Feni’s Sonagazi upazila, who was set on fire on April 6, succumbed to her burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Wednesday (April 10) night.

Nusrat was kept on life support at DMCH since April 8.

On April 6, the student went to the exam center at Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa. Later, some students, who are loyal to the principal of the madrasa, took her to the roof and set fire on her by four people wearing burqa, veil and gloves.

At her screaming, locals, students and teachers took her to hospital.

The heinous incident occurred days after her mother on March 28 filed a case against the madrasa principal SM Siraj-ud-Doula on charge of harassing the girl sexually on March 27.
