Drug trader killed in Kushtia gunfight Rafikul Islam

KUSHTIA: An alleged drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight at Harra area in Kushtia Sadar upazila on Friday night (July 19).

The deceased was identified as Rafikul Islam, 37, son of late Mohon Mandol of Hatosh Haripur village of the upazila.

A team of police raided Harra area after being reported that a band of drug dealers were engaged in a gunfight, Kushtia Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nasir Uddin told Banglanews.

Fearing presence of law enforcers, drug dealers opened fire on them. In self defense, police retaliated, triggering a gun battle. At one stage, Rafiqul Islam was killed in the gunfight, OC said.

Rafiqul was a listed drug dealer in disguised as a transport worker.  He had a lot of cases including that of drugs and arms filed against him with various police stations of Kushtia, OC further said.

According to Mita Khatun, 32, wife of Rafiqul Islam, her husband was taken away by DB police from in-laws while he was asleep on Thursday night. He got bail on 9 June after being imprisoned for two months.
