Flood situation worsens in 8 dists

DHAKA: Heavy rains for the last few days and onrush of water from the upstream submerged low-lying areas in Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj, Kurigram, Moulvibazar, Chattogram, Brahmanbaria and Dinajpur districts. 

In Jamalpur, water level of Jamuna River is flowing 126 cm above danger-level due to onrush of hill water, heavy rainfall on Monday (July 15) noon, marooning about two lakh people of six upazilas of the district.

Water Development Board (WDB) gauge reader Abdul Mannan confirmed this information to Banglanews.

In Bogura, different villages in Sariakandi and Dhunat upazilas were flooded due to the rise of water level in the Jamuna River, said local public representatives. 

The Jamuna was flowing 69 centimeters above the danger level in the two upazilas inundated low-lying areas of several villages here.

Due to flashflood, affected people were forced to flood protection embankments. 

In Moulvibazar, about one lakh people have got marooned in a municiplaty and eight unions of three upazilas of the district due to flood caused by flashflood due to rains and orush of upstreams.

The Manu River was flowing 83 centimeters, Kushiara 52 cm and Dholai 15 cm above the danger level in the three upazilas, said Moulvibazar Water Development Board around 10am on Monday.

In Kurigram, about three hundred villages in low-lying areas in nine upazilas of the district went under water and many educational institutions were shut as those got swamped by flashflood.

Academic activities have remained suspended in 285 primary schools as classrooms, playgrounds and adjacent areas of those went under water.

In Chattogram, almost all unions of Satkania upazila in Chattogram are affected due to flash flood and onrush of hill water.

Five kilometers area on Keranihat-Bandarban road went under water, halting road communication of Bandarban with other parts of the country for last few days.

In Sirajganj, different parts of Sadar upazila are experienceing serious flooding due to torrential rains and increase of water level in the Jumuna river. 

The Jamuna was flowing 16 centimeters above the danger level at Sirajganj point inundated low-lying areas of several unions of the upazila.  

In Brahmanbaria, five hundred families were marooned as 20 villages of three unions in Akhaura upazila inundated by flashflood after embankment of the Hawra river collapsed on Monday. 

In Dinajpur, the Punorbhoba, Atrai, Choto Jamuna rivers water is flowing near the danger level in the morning and it may cross danger level in afternoon, said officials of Water Development Baord of Dinajpur.

Farmers fear a huge loss of paddy due to the flood water.
