BARGUNA: A young man was hacked to death in front of his wife, allegedly by his wife's former husband and aides before Barguna Government College Wednesday (June 26). 

A video of the brutal attack went viral on social media, triggering widespread outrage.

Deceased Rifat Sharif, 22 was son of one Dulal Sharif from Maitha-Lobon Gola area under Burir Char union in Barguna sadar upazila. 

Police said the attackers were identified as Noyon Bond and his friends Nishan Farazi and Rabby Akon, through scrutinizing a CCTV footage of the incident.  

Barguna District Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Secretary General Nurul Islam Rony told Banglanews that two young men stabbed Rifat indiscriminately with machetes, in front of his wife, in front of the college, around 10:30am. Rifat's wife Ayesha Siddiqa Minni tried to stop the attackers.

The two youths left the scene leaving Rifat critically injured, after stabbing him indiscriminately for a minute.

With help of the locals, Minni took him to Barguna General Hospital by a rickshaw where he was given first aid.

Rifat was shifted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 4pm.

Attacker Noyon Bond's mother Shaheda Begum said Noyon married Minni seven months ago. Later, they involved in a conjugal feud over Minni's affair with Rifat which later resulted in separation.

"Minni confirmed Noyon the divorce around two months ago and married Rifat afterwards," she added. 

Confirming the marriage of Rifat and Minni, slain Rifat's father Dulal Sharif said Noyon started to stalk Minni and posted offensive photos on Facebook claiming Minni as his wife. A rivalry ensued between Rifat and Noyon over it.

Police visited the spot. Efforts are on to nab the attackers including Noyon, said Barguna Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abir Mohammad Hossain.
