Polling officer  among 7 shot dead in Rangamati

RANGAMATI: Seven persons, including an assistant presiding officer, were reportedly shot dead by criminals in Bagaichhari upazila on Monday (Mar 18) evening.

The deceased were identified as MD Amir Hossian, Ansar men Al Amin, Bilkis Akter, Jahanara, Mantu Chakma, Mihir Kanti Datt and Abu Taiyab.  

Besides, 14 others sustained injuries in the criminal attack took place in Noy kilo area of the upazila around 6:30pm.  

Locals said a team of polling officials, led by presiding officer Abdul Hannan Arab, returning to upazila parishad office from Sijok area of Sajek union by vehicle carrying polling materials in the evening.

When it reached  Noy kilo area, a gang of miscreants burst fire on the vehicle , leaving five people, including presiding officer, two ansar men and an assistant teacher, dead on the spot and injured 14 others. 

Later, injured Mantu Chakma died at hospital.  

When contacted, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nadeem Sarwar confirmed the development to Banglanews.

The injured have been sent to Combined Military Hospital (c.m.h.) in Chattogram by helicopter, he added.
