DHAKA: UNHCR special envoy and Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has lauded Bangladesh for sheltering the displaced Rohingyas fleeing military crackdown in Rakhine state of Myanmar.
She also urged Myanmar to take back its citizens safely to their land.
Jolie made the call during her meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister AK Abdul Momen and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam at the ministry on Wednesday (February 6).
Following the meeting, foreign minister said Angelina Jolie expressed satisfaction over Bangladesh’s stance on the Rohingya issue.
“Bangladesh has set an example for the world with giving shelter to the Rohingya influx”, said the UNHCR special envoy.
AK Abdul Momen said, “Jolie has been requested to play the role of fund raising for the Rohingyas. I called upon her to collect this fund through an event in the United States. She replied that she would see this issue.”
On her 4-day visit, Jolie arrived in Bangladesh on February 4. She held a press conference after inspecting several Rohingyas camps in Cox’s Bazar on February 5.
Angelina Jolie was appointed special envoy in 2012.
