Barrister Mainul gets bail

DHAKA:  The High Court granted bail for six months to Barrister Mainul Hosein in a case filed under the Digital Security Act over defaming journalist Masuda Bhatti on a television talk show in October.

The HC bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Zafar Ahmed on Tuesday (December 18) passed the order after hearing the bail petition filed by Barrister Mainul.

Senior lawyer AF Hasan Arif and Advocate Mashud Rana stood for Mainul while Deputy Attorney General Khurshidul Alam moved for the state.

Mainul, a former adviser to the military-controlled caretaker government, was arrested from Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab’s Uttara residence in city on Monday night (October 22).

He was then taken to Detective Branch (DB) of DMP office in Dhaka for questioning.

Mainul’s appalling comment, about Masuda Bhatti on a talk show broadcast on October 16, triggered outrage in media.

Later on October 26, a case was against Mainul Hosein with Gulshan Police Station under Digital Security Act.

A total of 22 cases were filed against Mainul Hosein across the country, including Rangpur and Jamalpur following his comment.

Mainul was involved in newly-formed political alliance Jatiya Oikyafront, which comprises BNP, Gono Forum, JSD (Rab) and Nagorik Oikya, launched on October 13.
