Tarique didn’t breach election code of conduct: EC Election Commission secretary Helaluddin Ahmed briefing reporters

DHAKA: Election Commission secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman did not violate any election code of conduct by interviewing party nomination aspirants through video conferencing from London.

He also said the commission has nothing do on this matter.

The EC secretary Helaluddin Ahmed briefed reporters after a commission meeting on Monday (Nov 19).

Earlier on Sunday morning (Nov 18), BNP started interviewing their nomination aspirants for the 11th parliamentary polls while BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman, who is staying in London, has joined the interview through video conference. Tarique along with his mother BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has been convicted in Zia Orphanage and Charitable Trust graft cases.

Later at noon, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has sought the attention of the Election Commission on whether convicted fugitive BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman can take part in the electoral process through video conferencing.

At evening, Election commissioner Rafiqul Islam told media that if anyone files complaint against the matter with evidence then the commission will look into the matter according to law.

Then a delegation of the ruling Awami League has filed a complaint with the Election Commission over the matter.
