HC grants bail to Shahidul Alam

DHAKA: The High Court on Thursday (Nov 15) granted bail to photographer Shahidul Alam in a case filed under ICT Act.

The bench of Justice Sheikh Abdul Awal and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty came up with the order after hearing a petition on why Shahidul would not be granted bail.

Confirming about the bail order, barrister Jyotirmoy Barua said the High Court gave permanent bail to Shahidul granting the rule issued earlier in this regard. There is no bar for Shahidul’s release now.

Earlier on October 29, the HC asked the government to produce video footage of photographer Shahidul Alam’s interviews with foreign television channel Al-Jazeera and Facebook Live broadcasting information during the students’ movement.

On October 7, The High Court issued a rule asking authorities concerned of the government to explain within why photographer Shahidul Alam should not be granted bail in the case.

Earlier on Sep 11, Dhaka metropolitan session judge Imrul kayes rejected Shahidul’s bail petition. Later he filed bail petition with the High Court and hearing begun on Oct 3.

Acclaimed photographer Dr Shahidul Alam, Drik Gallery owner, was picked up from his Dhanmondi residence on August 5.

Shahidul is held in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act for “spreading propaganda” and anti-government information on Facebook and electronic media.
