EC asks to appoint field-level executive magistrates

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Ministry of Public Administration to appoint adequate number of executive magistrates in field level to oversee the code of conduct for the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.

According to EC instruction, executive magistrate to be appointed one for each upazila, one for 3 to 4 nearby wards in city corporation areas and one or to two for municipal areas in district sadar. Moreover, one magistrate to be appointed for closely situated 3 to 4 upazilas in hilly areas.

The EC instruction, signed by the commission’s joint secretary Farhad Ahmed Khan On Monday (Nov 12), also mentioned that the executive magistrates will be appointed till December 31, the day after the voting day.

Apart from Assistant Returning officer, assistant commissioner (Land) or district level admin cadres will be appointed as executive magistrates, the instruction said. 

Executive magistrates have the power to fine or jail any candidates or supporters for violating the election code of conduct.
