DHAKA: The government has taken an initiative to construct walkways stretching 220 kilometers along Buriganga, Shitalakhya and Balu rivers in Dhaka, in a bid to protect them from encroachment.

The plan was disclosed at the 38th meeting of the shipping ministry’s taskforce on river pollution control and navigability increase, on Thursday (Sept 20).

Forests & Environment Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud and Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque attended the meeting presided over by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan.

Meanwhile, 20-kilometer construction of the walkways has been completed along each of the three rivers, said the meeting.

The next phase work of constructing 50-kilometer will begin on Oct 5.

A proposal has been sent to the planning ministry to construct rest part of the walkways.
