DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government always believes in the freedom of press and journalists.

“None can complain that we have stifled voices of journalists. We never did and never will. Rather we did everything to ensure the rights of newsmen,” Sheikh Hasina said.

The premier made the remarks at a program in her office on Wednesday (Sep 19) on providing financial assistance allowance and donation cheque to physically sick, poor, accidentally injured journalists and family members of deceased journalists.

Sheikh Hasina also said, “Freedom is a good thing. However, there is saying- freedom is good but not for kids. So we must also be concerned about such use of freedom.”

“Journalists must play objective and responsible roles for the welfare of the country. It is the reality and I hope you (journalists) will do it.“ the premier added.

Urging journalists to carry out their duties with honesty, patriotism and confidence, the PM said, “I never worry about who writes in my favor or against. I only think whether what I did is right and that I have self-confidence.”
