Bangladesh Army chief meets Maldives President

DHAKA: Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh Army General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq called on President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom on Monday (18 January).

They discussed issues of bilateral and professional interests, says a press release issued by the ISPR (Inter Services Public Relations).

General Belal also called on Maldives’ Minister of Defense and National Security Adam Shareef Umar and Chief of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Major General Ahmed Shyiam.

As a gesture of friendship, General Belal presented seven pick-up trucks to MNDF Chief Major General Ahmed Shyiam, the release added.

Earlier, Bangladesh extended its support to Maldives under “Operation SAARC BANDHAN” when the country was hit by tsunami in 2004.

As a mark of deeply rooted relations between the two armed forces, Bangladesh Army presented seven three-ton trucks to MNDF in 2011.

General Belal left for Maldives on January 15 and expected to be back on January 19.
