Bashundhara Kings clinch Primer League title

DHAKA: Bashundhara Kings have secured the Premier League title in the debut for the first team in the history of domestic football in Bangladesh.

With this, Kings have created history by lifting Independence Cup title early in the season as no other club has the honor of winning two titles in the debut.

Players of Oscar Broszon are crowned the current title by 1-1 draw with Mohammedan Sporting Club at Sheikh Kamal Stadium in Nilphamari on Thursday (July 25).

Earlier on Wednesday (July 24), the match was adjourned a day after the match was postponed due to heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The Bashundhara Kings could have started title-winning celebration earlier. But the record 14-match winning team lost to the Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra at Sylhet District Stadium on July 19. Dhaka Abahani, who was second in the league table that day, also won the competition with a big margin.

But on the day, on which Bashundhara’s match stalled due to rain, Dhaka Abahani drew with Chittagong Abahani when Bashundhara needed only one point. That means, only a draw will help taste the title. The wait was finally over with two matches remaining in hand.

Mohammedan had progressed with the help of 8th minute’s goal by Suleiman Diabate in the match. But in the 37th minute, Bashundhara Kings' Brazilian forward Marcos Vinicius da Costa Soares da scored goal by head from corner and leveled the score.

Bashundhara Kings secured 59 points to win the title at the end of 22 matches, remaining two matches in hand. Of these, win 19 matches, 2 draws and lost in only one. The second-ranked Abahani Limited has achieved 55 points with 18 wins, one draw and 4 lost in 23 matches.

Kings began the season by lifting the Independence Cup beating Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra by 2-

1 in the final in December 2018.
