DHAKA: Atiqul Islam resigned as mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to contest for mayoral post in the city corporation polls elections slated for January 30 in 2020.

His resignation letter was sent to the Local Government Division on Monday (Dec 30).

Earlier on Sunday, ruling Awami League picked Atiqul to run as the DNCC mayoral candidate.

Atiqul Islam was serving as mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) from February this year after winning the 2018 by-elections. The mayoral post fell vacant after the then DNCC mayor Annisul Huq passed away.
