DHAKA: Workers suspended bus services in six southern districts of the country protesting implementation of new Road Transport Act-2018.

Bus service has been stopped on Khulna, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Jhenaidah and Satkhira routes since Monday morning (November 18), causing untold sufferings for passengers as it came abruptly.

Earlier on Sunday (November 17), bus service was stopped on Jessore route.

Passengers in those districts suffered immensely for the lack of transportation during the strike.

Earlier in the morning, president of the Khulna Motor Sramik Union Md Nurul Islam Bebi said workers suspended buses and minibuses on the routes demanding reformation of the newly enacted Road Transportation Act.

He said there is a provision of capital punishment for traffic accident deaths, and Tk 5 lakh as fine. A transport worker cannot afford it as they get Tk 15000 to Tk 20000 as salary per month.

Nurul Islam also suggested making all road accident cases bailable and reducing the level of punishments.

The ‘transport strike’ started a day after Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader declared the enforcement of the new Road Transport Act 2018.
