CHATTOGRAM: 10-15 sacks of rotten onion were dumped into Karnaphuli River at Firingi Bazar Bridge Ghat area in Khatunganj on Friday evening (November 15).
Rotten onion was removed from a couple of warehouses in Khatunganj which had been imported from Myanmar.
Earlier on Thursday night (November 14), cleaners removed about 20 tonnes of rotten onions from the garbage of City Corporation in Khatunganj.
On Saturday (November 16), sacks leaded with rotten onion were spotted in some warehouses of Khatunganj. The odor is spreading in the area. Workers are throwing them into dumping site.
It is reported that onions are rotting due to hot weather, as it took long to reach Bangladesh from Myanmar. The value of those who are not in good state is also decreasing. Importers are at a loss.
“It takes more than a week for onions to arrive here from Myanmar. Afterwards, onion starts to rot quickly at warehouses. On average, 100-150 sacks of onions are being rotted per day,” Abul Bashar, owner of Khatunganj Trading, told Banglanews.
Workers of Khatunganj are throwing rotten onions into dumping site as well as on the bank of Karnaphuli River, Chattogram City Corporation’s clean officer Morshed Alam said.
