16 jailed for defying hilsa ban in Chandpur

CHANDPUR: Two mobile courts jailed sixteen fishermen in different terms for violating the ongoing ban on catching mother hilsas in the Meghna River under Chandpur areas.

Ferdousi Begum, Haimchar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) executed the order against the detained fishermen at Haimchar area on Saturday (October 12). She sentenced 6 fishermen to a year in prison.

10 fishermen were detained from Matlab Uttar Upazila on Friday night (October 11). Matlab Uttar UNO Sharmin Akther led the court. 3 boats and fishing net were seized from them.

Chandpur District Fisheries Officer's Control Room said they were jailed in various terms.

Md. Asadul Baki, Chandpur District Fisheries Officer, told Banglanews: “The convicted fishermen of the two upazilas were sent to Chandpur District Prison on Saturday morning. District and upazila taskforce are conducting raids in sanctuaries of the district and upazila.”
