KURIGRAM: The woes of 7.5 lakh people of 578 villages under 56 unions in the district, who remain marooned in flood water for 10 days, has been intensified as Brahmaputra and Dharla rivers still flow above their respective danger levels.

The Brahmaputra was flowing 115 cm above the danger level at the Chilmari point, while the Dharla was flowing 91 cm above the red mark at the Bridge point on Friday (July 19).

Chilmari, Roumari and Rajibpur upazilas are now submerged under flood water. The main roads, including the administrative buildings, inundated in nearly knee-to-chest-deep water. 

During spot visit, the correspondent saw shortage of food, drinking water piles misery on people marooned in flood water for 10 days.

Though distribution of government relief has begun, but most of the flood victims have to face crises of food and drinking water, said local public representatives.

The entire Chilmari upazila has submerged by flashflood as embankment collapses in Kanchkol area. All types of activities have become stagnant as the entire area, including upazila administration, thana and hospital, were flooded due to the collapse.

Kurigram Acting Deputy Commissioner Hafizur Rahman told Banglanews that, so far 6,428 tons of rice, 5 tons of GR rice and 1,350,000 packet dry food for the flood victims and 6,428 tons of rice for Eid ul Azha have been allocated from the district administration. 

Relief will be provided to all the flood victim families, nobody will be dropped, he added.
