Rooppur power plant graft: Probe report by June 30

DHAKA: The investigation report over alleged corruption in purchasing furniture and other household items for Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant officials will be submitted by June 30, says Housing and Public Works minister SM Rezaul Karim.

The minister was addressing the Purification Award 20137-18 giving ceremony at the Secretariat on Sunday (June 23)

Mentioning that the public works department formed a probe committee headed by an additional chief engineer, he said initially the probe body has been asked to submit report in seven working days but later, the deadline has been extended to 30 days for detail investigation.

After receiving the report, the next action will be taken, he added.

SM Rezaul Karim said, “Of course, action will be taken against them the allegations against whom can be found in the Rooppur corruption incident”.

“We will also publish this report like report on Banani high-rise fire incident. Hopefully, we will get the report on June 30. Nothing will remain secret”, he added.

The country’s first nuclear power plant is being constructed at Rooppur in Pabna with more than $12 billion financial and technical assistance from Russia.

The public works department purchased the household articles for furnishing 966 apartments constructed mainly for the Russian engineers and officials of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project.

Each of the pillows was reportedly purchased for Tk 5,957 and lifted at a cost of Tk 760.

Reports on the purchase price of the household articles, including pillows in media went viral in social media.
