Foundation stone of Abrar Ahmed foot overbridge installed

DHAKA: The foundation stone of the foot overbridge named after Abar Ahmed Chowdhury, who was ran over by a bus on Pragati Sarani in the city on Tuesday,  has been laid on Wednesday (Mar 20).

On behalf of Brigadier General (retd) Arif Ahmed Chowdhury, father of Abrar, Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam laid the foundation stone on Pragati Sarani in the city around 11:30am.  

Through this, city mayor inaugurated the construction work of the foot overbridge.

After installation of foundation stone, Mayor Atiqul Islam said that the overbridge will be completed within next two months. This overbridge will be named after Abrar and his father will inaugurate it.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed all of us to do work unitedly to ensure road safety. We will hold a meeting with all the stakeholders at the South City Corporation office this afternoon. We have to do some work as soon as possible.

Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) Major General Md Emdad-Ul-Bari, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia and senior officials of DNCCC, DMP and BUP were also present at that time.

Earlier, DMP commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said “We have canceled the route permit of Suprobhat Paribahan buses last night. The driver of the killer bus was sued. There will be no buses of Suprobhat Paribahan in Dhaka city streets”.

All bus companies are being brought to franchise system. Through this, Dhaka’s public transportation system will be changed, he added.

Expressing solidarity with the demands of the protesting students, mayor and DMP commissioner gave assurance of quick execution of the demands and urged students to leave the streets and return to their classroom.
Earlier on Tuesday (March 19), Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, 20, a first year student of International Relations Department of the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), was killed as a recklessly driven city bus ran over him in city Nodda area on Pragati Sarani in the capital city.
