First Bengali periodical published on Turkish language and culture

First ever magazine ‘Merhaba’ on Turkish lifestyle, language, literature and culture is published by the Institute of Modern Languages (IML) of the University of Dhaka.

The magazine is edited by Soroj Mehedi, who is a University Teacher, Media analyst and researcher. Professor Dr. Shishir Bhattyacharya, Director of IML, and Md. Zakaria, Associate Professor of the department of Islamic History and Culture of the same University are advisory editors of the magazine.

Students wrote about their travel experiences in Turkey, the lifestyle of Turkish people, and stories of Turkish writers and scholars in the magazine. It also contains advice on higher study in Turkey. Muhibbullah Shahin serves as Assistant Editor of the publication. Besides, students of the Turkish Department M.A.A Badshah Alamgir, Masum Billah, Abu Taher Ujjal, Sanzida Akter, Naimul Islam, Abdullah Al Noman were also involved among others in editing the magazine.

When prompted, Soroj Mehedi, the coordinator of Turkish program and the editor of the magazine said, there is a historic relation between the Turkish and Bengali Muslims, but rarely there are any work about the history and tradition of these two communities. The publication of this magazine can be deemed to serve a need of time. ‘I believe the magazine will open a new way forward together for these two brotherly nations’, he added.

He thanked the students of 2018-2019 session of the Turkish Department, as well as the authorities of Institute of Modern Languages and the University of Dhaka, for facilitating the publication of the magazine.  Interested individuals can collect the magazine from the IML.
