218 schools shut in Sunamganj for flood water

SUNAMGANJ: Classes at 218 schools in different upazilas of the district have been suspended as those went under flood water on Thursday (July 11) as the Surma river flows over 97 cm of danger level.

During a spot visit, Banglanews correspondent saw, the road communication between the Sunamganj and Tahirpur upazila has got disconnected for flashflood due to incessant rain for the last few days and onrush of hill water.

Academic activities have been announced shut in 218 government primary schools of the district as classrooms and playgrounds of those went under water. Of those, 22 of Sadar upazila, 18 in Dowarabazar Upazila, 27 in Bishwambarpur Upazila, three in south Sunamganj upazila, 10 in Chhatak upazila, 30 in Jamalganj upazila, 19 of Tahirpur upazila and 59 in Dharmapasha upazila were closed, said Zillur Rahman, district primary education officer.

Meanwhile, at least 50 secondary schools, madrasa have been closed for the same reason. Of those, nine in Sadar Upazila, 17 in Bishwambarpur Upazila, four in Jamalganj upazilas, two in Dharmapasha upazila, 10 in Dowarabazar Upazila and eight secondary schools and madrasas in Tahirpur upazila have been closed, said District Education Officer Md Jahangir Alam on Thursday. 

In addition, more than 150 villages in Sadar, Tahirpur, Dowarabazar, Bishwambarpur upazilas of Sunamganj have been inundated by flood water. Drinking water and food crisis has reported in these areas.

Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Ahad told Banglanews that control room has been opened in every upazila for monitoring the situation. The administration has taken all the preparations to deal with the flood.
