Palak for withdrawing VAT on internet

DHAKA: Information and Telecommunications Technology State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak on Saturday categorically said he would propose to withdraw or reduce Value Added Tax (VAT) completely on internet.

He also expressed hope that the cost of internet service would be reduced after the cut.

The state minister came up with the assertion while addressing a pre-budget seminar at a city hotel in the capital.

Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), Bangladesh Computer Society (BCS) and the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) organized the seminar.

The ruling Awami League lawmaker said, “The government will be asked to allocate Tk 3700 crore in the budget for information, communications and technology sector.”

The government would assist if any Bangladeshi businessman takes steps to establish fiber optics and laptop production, he added.
