Jack Draper narrowly missed out on his maiden ATP clay-court title after falling to Norway’s Casper Ruud in a thrilling Madrid Open final.

The 23-year-old British number one was defeated 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in a closely contested encounter in the Spanish capital on Sunday.

Draper made a strong start, breaking early and taking a 5-3 lead in the first set. However, Ruud mounted a resilient comeback to win four consecutive games and snatch the opener.

Frustrated, Draper showed his emotions during the changeover but responded with composure to take the second set, setting up a decisive final frame.

In the third set, Ruud applied relentless pressure on Draper’s serve, eventually breaking for a 3-2 lead. The Norwegian, a two-time French Open finalist, held firm to close out the match and secure his first ATP Masters 1000 title.

“This sport can be cruel, but I’ll keep pushing. I think this loss will make me stronger,” said Draper afterward. “There were many positives, but in the crucial moments, his level stayed high while mine dipped slightly. I’ll use that as motivation to improve.”

Despite the disappointment, Draper can take pride in a standout performance at one of the key warm-up events ahead of the French Open, which begins later this month. It marks his deepest run at a tour-level clay tournament to date.

With his performance in Madrid, Draper is projected to break into the top five of the ATP rankings for the first time in his career.

“Jack’s been in great form all year,” said 26-year-old Ruud. “I knew I had to play my absolute best. He’s a phenomenal competitor.”
