BNP's 'no' to President’s dialogue on EC

The BNP has decided not to join the dialogue with President Abdul Hamid over forming the new Election Commission.

The party leaders discussed the issue in detail at a virtual meeting of its standing committee on Monday night (December 27), Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.

Later, he said through a press release sent to the media on Wednesday (December 29).

The party leaders think the talks will bring no fruitful result actually, he said.

"Without a constitutional assurance of an election-time neutral government and impartial administration, such dialogues are nothing but 'just to waste of time' over the formation of EC in the context of present political situation in Bangladesh," he said.

He said different registered political parties gave their opinions taking part in the dialogues at the invitation of president before the formation of two last ECs. BNP also gave its proposals to the president in written over the process of formation of the ECs.

"But all the initiatives went in vain as the Awami League government remained in power during the election-time," added.

BNP believes that no Election Commission will be able to hold a free, fair and acceptable general election in Bangladesh without an election-time non-party government in power.
