Don’t hang Quader until review: Moudud

DHAKA: Opposition BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Wednesday urged the go0vernemnt not to execute the verdict against Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah before review plea.

He said, “As per article 105 of the constitution, every citizen has the right to seek a review against any verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.”

Moudud, also a former Law Minister further said, “We demand the government not to execute the death sentence without entertaining Quader Mollah the scope for review.”

The BNP leader came up with the demand at a press conference arranged by Bangladesh ‘Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum’ at the south hall of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

In a written statement, Moudud said, “We’re observing with regret that the government has started the process of implementing the court’s execution order against Quader Mollah depriving him of his right to file a review petition against the SC verdict.”

Moudud, also a BNP standing committee member, said they want to see the government exercise the constitutional provision of review as it is the supreme law of the republic.

He said that the trial proceeding of the case has become questionable globally as it did not follow the conventional law and maintain ‘international’ standard.

Moudud claimed that the government had filed the case to fulfill its petty political gain.

However, the BNP leader did not answer any question of the reporters.

On September 17, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court sentenced lifer Jamaat-e- Islami assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

BNP standing committee member and Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum president Rafiqul Islam Miah, Bangladesh Bar Council vice chairman Khandakar Mahbub Hossain, BNP chairperson’s adviser and former SCBA president advocate Zainul Abedin, and incumbent SCBA secretary Mahbub Uddin Khokon, MP, among others were present at the press conference.
