Manikganj : Over 100 people, including some policemen, were injured in a factional clash of BNP in Paturia ghat area here on Sunday morning over the reception of party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on her way to Khulna.

Police and witnesses said the clash ensued at about 10:30am when the supporters of local BNP leader Parvez tried to drive away the followers of

expelled leader Tofazzal Hossain Tazu from the ghat area where they gathered to receive the Leader of the Opposition in the Parliament.

Khaleda was to address a roadside rally in Patuaria on her way to Khulna to attend the grand rally of BNP scheduled to be held at 3pm Sunday.

Both the groups chased each other with sticks, leaving at least 100 people injured. A member of law enforcers also received injuries when they tried to disperse the feuding groups.

Witnessing the chaotic situation, Khaleda Zia cancelled the programme and left the area under tight security.

This is Khaleda Zia’s first visit in Khulna after Sheikh Hasina-led grand alliance assumed power in 2009.
