BNP leader Ishraque Hossain on Sunday said that Nagar Bhaban will operate under his supervision, with non-essential officials barred from attending office, though key public services like birth certificate issuance will continue.
Speaking during a sit-in demanding he be sworn in as Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor, Ishraque said the protest would continue until he takes office.
Declaring himself the legitimate mayor by the people’s mandate and court verdict, he accused the government of delaying his oath for political reasons and urged immediate intervention from the chief adviser.
Earlier on March 27 this year, Dhaka's First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal Judge Md Nurul Islam overturned the 2020 DSCC election result, declared Ishraque the winner, and ordered the Election Commission to issue a gazette within 10 days.
Later on April 27, the EC issued the notification declaring Ishraque the DSCC mayor.
On May 14, DSCC resident Mamunur Rashid filed the writ petition with the HC, challenging the tribunal's verdict and the EC's gazette.
The High Court on May 22 summarily rejected the writ petition that sought a stay on the Election Commission's decision to declare BNP-nominated candidate Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of DSCC.
