A leader of the Dhaka University (DU) unit of Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the BNP, was fatally stabbed in Suhrawardy Udyan late Tuesday night, police and hospital sources said.
The victim, Shahriar Samya, 25, served as the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. He was a student of the International Relations department from the 2018–19 academic session and resided in room 222 of the hall.
The incident occurred near the Mukta Mancha area of the park when Samya, while riding a motorcycle, collided with another bike. A dispute broke out, leading to a physical altercation, during which he was attacked with a sharp weapon, according to police.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around midnight, where doctors declared him dead.
“He had a deep stab wound on his right leg and was brought in bleeding heavily,” said Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp. “The body has been kept in the morgue for post-mortem.”
Chhatra Dal office secretary Wasi Tami confirmed Samya’s party affiliation.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Mansur told Banglanews that a murder case has been filed and an investigation is underway.
Masud Alam, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division, said two people have been arrested in connection with the killing. Their identities will be disclosed after further interrogation, he added.
