9 killed in blockade violence

DHAKA: At least nine people were killed and scores injured in separate violence across the country on Tuesday, the fourth day of blockade enforced by BNP-led 18-party alliance.

Of the nine, six were activists of BNP-Jamaat alliance of Satkhira, Chandpur, Noakhali and Chittagong, one Jubo League activist of Satkhira and rests two of Patuakhali and Chittagong are general people.

In Satkhira: Two activists of Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, were allegedly shot dead and four others injured during clash with law enforcers in Sokhipur area under Debhata upazila of the district in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Hossain Ali, 17, son of Abdus Sattar of Debhata upazila and Arizul Islam, 20, son of Sabed Ali of Goranbaria area of the upazila.

Police and BGB sources said that the leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shibir blockaded the road around 7:00am and they locked into a clash while the law enforcers barricaded them.

At one stage, Shibir men hurled cocktails aiming the law enforcers, brick-chips, in reply, law enforcers opened fire to disperse blockaders, leaving two dead and four others injured.

In another incident, a Jubo League activist was beaten to death by blockaders at Mahmudpur of sadar upazila of the district on Tuesday afternoon.

In Chittagong: A leader of Juba Dal, youth wing of BNP, was killed in a clash between blockade supporters and law enforcers in Mandaritola area under Sitakunda upazila of the district early Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Russell, 33, ward Juba Dal President of Hasnabad of the upazila.

Police sources said a clash erupted between picketers and police in Mandaritola area at around 1:30am, leaving Russell injured critically.

Later, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning.

On the other hand, a man was killed when a covered van hit a roadside tree after being petrol bomb like object hurled by blockaders in Saltgola area of the port city early in the day.

The deceased was identified as Mahbub, 30, the driver of the readymade garments-loaded covered van.

In Chandpur:  At least two people, including a Chhatra Dal activist, were killed and 15 others injured in a clash between blockaders and police in JN Sengupta road area of the district town.

The deceased were identified as Raton Patwari, 24, an activist of Chhatra Dal and student of Chandpur Government College and Siam, 14, a class-VIII student of Chandpur Al-Amin Collegiate School.

Police and witnesses said BNP men brought out pro-blockade procession in JN Sengupta road area around 10:30am. While passing the area, BNP men hurled brick-chips at police.

In reply, police fired rubber bullets and bullets from shotgun to disperse them that triggered a clash, leaving 17 people injured.

Later, the injured were rushed to Chandpur Sadar Hospital where duty doctor declared Siam and Raton dead.

In Dhaka: A Madrasa teacher, another victim of 131-hour blockade violence, succumbed to his burn injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mawlana Abdus Sattar 70, hailed from Badarpur union of Patuakhali district.

Nephew of the deceased Rezaul Karim said that he sustained burn injuries when the blockaders torched auto bike carrying him by pouring petrol at Souravkathi in Pirojpur on November 30, the first day of the 18-party enforced blockade.

In Noakhali: A BNP activist drowned in pond water after police chase at Gopai of Datterhat Bazar under the sadar upazila.

The deceased is Abdus Salam, 60, a businessman and BNP activist.  

3rd day’s blockade violence

Three BNP men, including two Jubo Dal leaders, were killed in separate violence across the country during blockade enforced by 18-party alliance on Monday.

2nd day’s blockade violence

Miscreants killed a Jubo Dal leader in Daudkandi upazila of Comilla district on Sunday night.

1st day’s blockade violence

Five people including an activist of Chhatra Shibir, an activist of Jubo Dal and three pedestrians were killed in separate violence in Dhaka, Jhenidah, Pabna, Chittagong and Bogra on Saturday, the first day of 72-hour blockade.

In the first spell of blockade called by the opposition alliance, 22 more people were killed in different incidents of violence across the country.
