7yr in condemned cell despite acquittal: HC orders judicial inquiry

The High Court (HC) on Sunday (Aug 7) ordered a judicial inquiry into the allegation of a person who had been locked up in the condemned cell of Chattogram central jail for seven long years despite getting acquittal in a murder case.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order after holding hearing on a plea filed by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir.

Advocate Manir moved the plea before the court, while Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappy stood for the state.

Recently an online news portal published a report on the sufferings of Abul Qashem, who was acquitted by the High Court in the case lodged over the murder of one Jane-Alam. The High Court order was sent to Chattogram Additional District and Sessions Judge Court, but the jail authorities didn't receive any order in this regard.

Abul Qashem, who was arrested in the case on April 14, 2015, kept at a condemned cell, in spite of the fact that the High Court acquitted him of the charges in 2013.
