7yr in condemned cell despite acquittal: HC asks victim to appeal

The High Court (HC) has directed Abul Kashem, a person locked up in the condemned cell for seven years despite getting acquittal in a murder case, to file a written application before the court.

As Supreme Court lawyer Md Shishir Monir presented the matter on Thursday (July 4) in a High Court division bench comprising Justice Jahangir Hossain Salim and Justice Md Bashir Ullah, the court asked to file an application regarding the matter.

Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi was present in the court during the hearing this morning.

According to the report published in the newspaper, Abul Kashem was acquitted in the murder case of Jan-e Alam of Lohagara Police Station.

The order of his acquittal reached the Court of Additional Chittagong District and Sessions Judge from the High Court in due course. But the order did not reach the jail authorities even in seven years.

On April 14, 2015, the then Additional Chittagong District and Sessions Judge sent him to jail stating him ‘shown arrest’, after he appeared before the first court. Since that day, Kashem has been locked up in the prison's condemned cell.
