Shaheen Anam sued for hurting religious sentiment

A case has been filed against Shaheen Anam, wife of Daily Star editor Mahfuz Anam and executive director of NGO Manusher Jonno Foundation, for hurting religious sentiments of the minority Hindu community.

Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court ordered Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the case and submit a report within December 21.

Akash Ghose, a member of Hindu community, filed the case with Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday. Banchte Shekha executive director Angela Gomes, is co-accused in the case.

Quoting the case dossier, complainant’s counsel Ranajit Chandra Dey said Manusher Jonno Foundation executive director Shaheen Anam along with Banchte Shekha executive director Angela Gomes are engaged in a deep-rooted conspiracy to create chaos among the people of Hindu community. The two NGO bosses have been holding seminars and meetings at various parts of the country for years seeking amendment to the Hindu law. The duo is working to put people of minority community against the government.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahmudul Mohsin took cognizance of the case, asked PIB to investigate it and submit report.

As part of longstanding protest, Hindu community people have recently registered a demonstration against unholy move of Shaheen Anam and her cohorts at Sutrapur in the capital on Friday. The agitating people also burnt effigies of Mahfuz Anam and his wife Shaheen Anam for hurting religious sentiments.

Hindu leaders accused Anam couple of hatching a conspiracy to create internal faction within minority community and destabilise the country. They also said journalist Anam and his wife are trying to damage religious aristocracy of Hindus.

Apart from seminars at various places, Shaheen Anam and Angela Gomes are holding webinars to spread religious hatred. On March 4, they published a draft of “Hindu Succession Act 2020.” The NGO bosses are masterminds behind the proposed law, alleged the demonstrators.

The Hindu leaders also claimed that Shaheen Anam formed a committee with her NGO staff Rina Roy, a woman of minority community, to amend the succession law. Besides, Mahfuz Anam published fabricated various articles, reports and fictions in the Daily Star to confuse people, hide the real situation and implement their evil agenda.
In 2007-2008, Mahfuz Anam supported the caretaker regime and tried to eliminate Bangabandhu’s daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from politics. He tried to launch a new party.

Now, Mahfuz along with his wife are conspiring to create a distance between Awami League government and Hindus, a major vote bank, they alleged.
