In one of the biggest hauls of smuggled gold in the country, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) seized 58 gold bars worth Tk 4.5 crore from a Satkhira-bound bus of Shohagh Paribahan.
This is one of the biggest seizures of the illegally smuggled precious metal in the country in recent months, officials said.
Three persons--bus driver Shahadat Hossain, his assistant Ibrahim and supervisor Taikul Islam-- were detained from Malibagh area in the capital during the drive.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate's Director General Md Abdur Rauf revealed the information at a press conference held at IDEB Bhaban in the capital.
The gold bars, came from Dubai, have been smuggling to a neighbouring country using Bangladesh as a transit, he said.
Abdur Rauf said after getting secret information, the Customs officials conducted a search at a Shohagh Paribahan bus in Dhaka's Malibag area and found the gold bars under the seat of the driver.
