COX’S BAZAR: The scheduled biennial council of the district Chhatra League could not be held on Thursday night due to a clash between two factions in the unit of the pro-Awami League student organization.

Witnesses and police said the trouble started at about 9:30pm just before the inauguration of the council at the District Cultural Center. “The two rival groups locked into a clash and chased each other, creating a chaotic situation,” says a spot account of the melee.

There were, however, no reports of injury.

Law enforcers brought the situation under control at around 00:30am.

A number of BCL leaders, wishing anonymity, told that the clash ensued at around 9:39pm. Later sporadic clashes and chase and counter-chase also took place.

At one stage, when police tried to take five central leaders out of the center for their safety at about 11:30pm, some unruly BCL activists who stayed outside fired blank shots, holding some 300 leaders and activists in confinement inside.

One faction held Kaisarul Haq, general secretary of the town-unit BCL, and his supporters responsible for the trouble correspondent could not contact Nurul Azim Konok, president of the district Chhatra League, for his comment while GS MA Manjur declined to make any remark.

Police super Nibas Chandra Majhi said that the situation is now under control. And he wouldn’t confirm the incident of firing.
