The By-election to Laxmipur-2 constituency, regular polls to 204 Union Parishads (UPs) and two municipalities are underway on Monday amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The voting began around 8 am and will continue till 4 pm.
The Laxmipur-2 constituency (Parliamentary Seat No-275) fell vacant on January 28 last after independent MP Mohammad Shahid Islam alias Kazi Papul was sentenced by a Kuwait court for criminal offences involving moral turpitude.
Besides, 173 Union Parishads (UPs) have gone to polls in Barishal division, while two UPs in Narsingdi district, six UPs in Gazipur, 13 in Madaripur, two UPs in Sunamganj, six UPs in Laxmipur, one UP in Rangpur and one UP in Barguna.
The electronic voting machines (EVMs) are being used in the voting of 20 UPs out of 204.
Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) decided to hold elections to 367 UPs of the country in first phase. But, on June 10 last, the EC postponed polls to 163 union parishads due to the high infection rate of coronavirus.
As per the schedules, Jhalokati sadar and Seterganj (Dinajpur) municipality elections are also being held today. The EVMs will be used in Laxmipur-2 by-polls and both Jhalokati sadar and Seterganj municipality elections.
