Shitalakkhya launch capsize death toll reaches 35 

The death toll from Sunday's launch-capsize in the Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj reached 35 as rescuers recovered five more bodies on Tuesday.

Narayanganj sadar naval police inspector Md Shahidul Alam confirmed the matter to Banglanews. 

Five more bodies were recovered this morning and later those were handed over to their respective families, he said.

Earlier, the bodies of 30 persons were recovered until yesterday as a Munshiganj-bound launch, carrying over 50 passengers, capsized on Sunday evening.

The launch sank near the third Shitalakkhya Bridge at Koylaghat of Syedpur area when it was hit by a "coaster tanker", he said.

Meanwhile, two probe committees were formed to investigate Sunday's motor-launch capsize incident.

Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mostain Billah said a seven-member investigation committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate (ADM), has been formed to probe the incident.

The district administration will give Tk25,000 to each of the deceased’s family for the burial purpose, Mostain Billah said.

Meanwhile, a four-member committee has been formed with BIWTA director Rafiqul Islam as its convener to investigate the motor-launch accident.
