A Natore court on Monday awarded death penalty to two people for killing an Awami League leader and freedom fighter Aynal Haque in Baraigram upazila of Natore.
The death row convicts are- Md Torab Ali, son of Bahar Uddin Molla from Mahishbhanga village of the upazila, and Md Shamim, son of Polan Molla from the same area.
Judge Saifur Rahman Siddiqui of Natore additional district and sessions judge court handed down the verdict with Tk 10,001 fine for each convicts.
Additionally, the court also acquitted 11 other accused in the case as the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence against them.
Natore judge court Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Sirajul Islam confirmed the matter to Banglanews.
He said victim Aynal Haque, former chairman of Majgaon union parishad, was hacked to death by the convicts on March 29, 2002.
Later, victim’s daughter-in-law Nazma Zakir filed a case against 17 people.
