Kotwali OC, 4 others sued over extortion

Five policemen including the officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station in Dhaka and a police source have been sued for allegedly extorting and intimidating a businessman.

Sohel Mir, an apparel trader, on Monday filed the case with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Md Noman.

The accused are- Kotwali police station OC Mizanur Rahman, Sub-Inspector (SI) Pabitra Sarkar, SI Khalid Seikh, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shahinur Rahman, constable Md Mizan and Source Motaleb.

The court ordered Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the matter under a police officer with a rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and submit the report within September 16.

According to case statements, the accused police officials intercepted plaintiff Sohel Mir in Wiseghat area under Kotwali police station in Dhaka on August 2. They searched his body and picked Tk 2900 from his pocket. When Sohel asked for his money, the policemen intimidate him with death in crossfire. They also put 214 pieces of yaba pills in Sohel’s pocket and took him to the police station. 

On information, when Sohel’s family members went to station, the accused policemen demanded Tk 5 lakh for his release. The family paid Tk 2 lakh to police before he was released from detention. The accused policemen also warned Sohel and his family not to disclose the matter and threatened him with crossfire death.
