Sinha case: Rifatul Islam Sifat gets bail Rifatul Islam Sifat

A Cox’s Bazar court today granted bail to Rifatul Islam Sifat, one of the two companions of Major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed, in two cases involving murder and drug-related charges.

Tamanna Farah, acting judge of senior judicial magistrate court (Teknaf-3), issued the order after his lawyer placed a petition seeking bail in the cases, Sifat’s lawyer Mahbub Alam Tipu said.

On Sunday, a Cox’s Bazar court granted bail to Stamford University student Shipra Rani Devnath, another companions of Major (retd) Sinha Md Rashed, in a case filed under the Narcotics Control Act.

Major (retd) Sinha was killed in a police firing at Baharchhara police check-post on July 31. Sharmen Shahria Ferdush, elder sister of Sinha, filed the murder case with Teknaf Senior Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday, accusing nine police personnel.

However, Sifat and Shipra were arrested after police filed separate cases against them.

Shipra and two other students of Stamford University — Shahedul Islam Sifat and Tahsin Rifat Nur — had gone to a cottage with slain ex-army major Sinha. Police arrested Shipra and Rifat from Nilima Resort on August 1, recovered liquor and marijuana and filed a narcotics case against them.

Major (retd) Sinha had been making travel documentaries for a YouTube channel called ‘Just Go’ with the three university students.
