PM opens country’s highest-ever road

BANDARBAN: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Tuesday morning inaugurated the country’s highest ever Thanchi-Alikadam road in the district.

The road was opened for traffic in a program at Bandarban Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) office through a video conference from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) at 11:20pm.

Director of Social Work Organization of Bangladesh Army Brigadier General Abdul Wahab, Commander of Bandarban Region Brigadier General Naqib Ahmed Chowdhury, deputy commissioner Mizanul Haque Chowdhury, police super Mizanur Rahman, additional chief engineer of roads division Engineer Arifur Rahman and high-ups of civil administration, among others, were present in the program.


Sheikh Hasina thanked the Army for completing such a beautiful road in such manner and announced to visit the road within a short time.

She also said this road would help people in business, education and receiving better health care facilities quickly.

Nezarat Deputy Collector (NDC) Shamim Hossain told banglanews that the 33 kilometer long and 18 feet wide road has been paved 3,500 feet above the sea level, the highest road of the country.

Commander of 17 (ECB) Engineering Corps Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Monowarul Islam said this was not only the highest road in the country but also one of the highest roads of South Asia.


He further said the road will be opened for vehicles within a short time.

Thanchi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Anwar Hossain told banglanews that people had to cross around 190-km picturesque hilly road to go to Thanchi and Alikadam.

“It will take only 40 minutes to ply between Thanchi and Alikadam by this road,” he added.

Army’s engineering department 16 ECB officer major Mahbubul Haque told banglanews that in 2006, the construction work of the road started with the help of engineering department of Bangladesh Army, involving Tk 120-crore.
