DHAKA: The International Mother’s Day is being observed in the country as elsewhere across the world on Sunday, honoring mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.
Usuallym the Day is celebrated on different days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. In Bangladesh, Mother’s Day is observed red on the second Sunday of the month of May.
People wish their mothers, present them gifts, arrange various programs showing respect to the mothers and honoring their contributions to society.
The celebration of Mother's Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a celebration of the mother church, not motherhood).
Despite this, in some countries Mother's Day has become synonymous with these older traditions.
