DHAKA: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin said that the army will stay in cantonments during the city corporations elections.
The CEC made the statement on Thursday evening regarding the deployment of army in the upcoming city polls in Dhaka and Chittagong.
He said the army will stay in cantonment as it is located in the middle of Dhaka metropolitan city.
Explaining the matter, the CEC said that the army can easily move to Dhaka North and South city corporations areas. So, they will stay in the cantonment as ‘reserve force’.
He further said that the army will also respond to the returning officers as ‘striking force’.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Election Commission (EC) asked the army to be deployed for four days (from April 26 to April 29) in three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong for upcoming elections.
But on Wednesday, the EC instructed the army to stay in the cantonment.
