CHITTAGONG: A Lighterage Vessel, carrying 1,050 ton food grains, capsized in the Bay of Bengal after being hit by another vessel at Swandip channel on Friday morning.
No casualties were reported and the sunken vessel was identified as MV Marshad-2, said Akkas Ali, joint director Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
He told banglanews that the lighter ship MV Marshad-2, carrying 1050 ton food grains, starting from Chittagong port, was heading to Swandip.
“The vessel collided head-on with another lighter ship MV Salma near south buoy of Swandip channel around 9:30am,” he added.
The BIWTA director also said, “When the vessel had begun to slowly sink; sailors of another ship, which was passing through the sea route, rescued the sailors on board the sunken vessel.”
Drives are underway to recover the vessel, he added.
